Senator Clinton is planning to be in San Francisco the evening before the critical January 19 Nevada caucuses, according to a Northern California labor group.
The Instituto Laboral de La Raza claims on its Web site that Mrs. Clinton is a confirmed speaker for the Latino labor rights group's dinner on January 18 in downtown San Francisco. A spokesperson for Mrs. Clinton's campaign did not respond to an inquiry about the Friday event. Mrs. Clinton was in South Carolina today and her official schedule for late this week has not been released.
***UPDATE: Or maybe not. The labor institute has just updated its site to substitute Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi as a speaker on behalf of Mrs. Clinton at Friday's dinner. A spokesperson for the group said Monday afternoon that Mrs. Clinton is now expected to be in Nevada that day. More to come. The remainder of the original post appears below.***
The program for the event shows a number of union bigwigs will be in attendance, which presents yet another chance for Mrs. Clinton to do some schmoozing for endorsements.
Northern California's not an illogical place for Mrs. Clinton to visit right now, since the Golden State is voting as part of the Super Tuesday showdown on February 5. She was in the southern part of the state on Friday. Senator Obama is expected in that area on Wednesday and up in Silicon Valley on Thursday. Visits to California could also help both campaigns recharge their coffers through fundraising, though a lot of donors out West have maxed out by giving at least $2,300 during the numerous visits Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama made to the region. There's a school of thought that says candidates should not campaign in a state right before an election because their visit can distract and exhaust campaign staffers at just the time that they need to make sure everything is ready to go for election day. Maybe that's what's at work here, or perhaps Mrs. Clinton plans to jet back across the state line to Reno or Las Vegas late on election 'eve or early the next morning.
